Four JKM programs most families have never heard of — monthly cash for low-income seniors, RM500/month for families caring for a bedridden parent at home, free day centres, and free home visits.
✓ Monthly cash — BWE (verify rate with JKM)
Carer allowance — BPT (RM500/month)
Free day centres (PAWE)
Free home help (KBDR)
⚠️ Most families miss out on help they're entitled to
All four programs below are free to apply for. If you're caring for a parent at home — especially one who is bedridden — you may qualify for monthly cash or free support.

Programs you may qualify for:
This is an indicative guide only. Final eligibility is determined by a JKM officer after a home visit and assessment. Income thresholds and criteria can vary by district. When in doubt, go to your nearest JKM office and ask — there is no penalty for applying.
BPT is the most overlooked. It pays RM500/month directly to whoever is caring for a bedridden family member at home. It's not charity — it's the government recognising that family carers do real work. The money goes to the carer, not the patient, and doesn't affect any other aid the patient gets. If your parent can't move without help, check BPT first.
PAWE centres are also underused. A mobile but lonely parent can attend free, Monday to Friday. Regular social activity is one of the best ways to slow cognitive decline and reduce depression — both major reasons families end up needing a nursing home sooner.

Living at home — not in a government home or hospital
You are Malaysian, caring full-time at home for a family member (spouse, parent, child, sibling) who is bedridden or severely disabled
They can't bathe, dress, eat, or use the toilet on their own — usually from stroke, dementia, cancer, or severe disability — and a doctor's letter confirms this
They live at home, not in a nursing home or hospital
Household income usually below RM3,000–RM5,000/month. JKM looks at total expenses too — heavy care costs can push the limit higher.
How to apply
Get a doctor's letter confirming the diagnosis and bedbound status first — this is the most common missing document
Visit your nearest JKM district office (find your office). BPT isn't online — a home visit is required.
Bring: MyKad (carer + patient), doctor's letter, proof of household income
A JKM officer visits to verify. If approved, RM500/month goes to the carer's bank account.
Register at the centre — bring MyKad and a passport photo
What PAWE can't do
PAWE is for social activities, not medical care. Centres can't handle dementia with behavioural issues, incontinence, or daily medical procedures. If your parent needs medical supervision during the day, you'll want a private day care centre — see our facility directory.
A JKM social worker will visit and match a volunteer
What to expect
KBDR is extra help, not full care. Volunteers usually visit a few times a week, not daily. It works best alongside family care — you handle evenings and weekends, KBDR fills weekday gaps. For daily medical care, you'll need a private home nurse or day care centre.
Free or subsidised homes for elderly Malaysians with no family or income. Capacity is limited and waiting lists are long, so not a quick option. Apply through your JKM district office. RSK programme page →
Tabung Bantuan Perubatan (TBP) — Medical aid fund
Helps with major medical costs (heart, kidney, neurological). Needs a referral from a government hospital doctor — apply via the hospital's medical social worker. More at jkm.gov.my →
Skim Mesra Usia Emas (SMUE) — Selangor only
For Selangor residents 60+ (MyKad address must be Selangor). Provides grocery aid — current amounts vary, check with YAWAS. Apply at e-mesra.yawas.my or your DUN service centre. YAWAS Careline: 03-5481 8800.

Frequently asked questions
Yes — they go to different people. BWE goes to the elderly person, BPT goes to the carer. If a low-income parent on BWE later becomes bedridden, their carer can apply for BPT separately. Each is assessed on its own. Confirm with your local JKM office as rules vary by district.
Having a maid doesn't automatically disqualify you — JKM looks at the full picture. But if your household income is above the threshold, BPT is unlikely. KBDR is mainly for families without regular carer support.
Yes. PAWE day centres are free for any Malaysian 60+, no income limit. In Selangor, SMUE grocery aid is open to all residents 60+ — see www.yawas.my. TBP (medical aid) can also help with major medical costs even at middle incomes, depending on the condition.
About 4–8 weeks once your documents are complete and the JKM home visit is done. Payments go monthly to the bank account. Delays usually come from missing paperwork — for BPT, the doctor's letter is the most common gap. Get it ready first.
Search "Pejabat Kebajikan Masyarakat" + your district (e.g. "Pejabat Kebajikan Masyarakat Petaling Jaya"), call 03-8000 8000, or check www.jkm.gov.my. Walk-ins are fine, Mon–Fri 8am–5pm.
